This class will be taught by local potter Judy Gerber. Judy Gerber’s love of pottery began 20+ years ago with classes at Baden Creek Pottery. Making, creating and immersing herself in clay became meditation and a pause from a demanding schedule of raising a family. It was not long before she knew that a studio of her own was the goal. Sunnyridge Studio became a reality when she found their new home along the shores of Lake Huron, a perfect backdrop and inspiration for creating and exploring with clay. While awaiting and recovering from a liver transplant Judy found herself with idle time for sketching, searching, and planning all the possibilities of clay for her renewed return to the studio. Her education and passion for pottery progressed through many private pottery classes, evening classes and workshops, learning from talented passionate potters who she is proud to now call friends, exploring surface decorating, wax resist techniques, glaze recipes and an independent study working on form. Judy is looking forward to sharing her love of working with clay at the SHAC.

To start with this is not rug hooking like you would do if you bought a kit at a craft store. Where that is a craft enjoyed by many, this class will introduce you to the traditional art of fine hooking using wool. This ancient art form is very popular in the Maritimes and has been popular there for at least 200 years where strips of woven material were looped through the open weave of a burlap base, with wool remaining the preferred fiber. Potato sacks evolved into burlap or linen, and bent nails and button hooks were replaced by manufactured hooks featuring wooden handles. Projects today range from pillows and rugs to runners and wall hangings. Come learn a very traditional and Canadian art form and get started on your own wall hanging.
This class will be taught by Kristina Mitchell. Kristina has always been interested in the arts and being creative. The love of traditional Elizabethan rug hooking took hold 10 years ago when she picked up a kit in Nova Scotia at a quaint studio with beautiful works of this forgotten art form. The ability to create a beautiful piece of artwork from strips of wool enticed her and her passion was formed.
